Over 50% of the UK’s largest companies have not discussed social media at board level over the last year despite this area becoming a more and more important tool for business I learnt whilst waiting at Grant Thornton from their very readable Strategies for Growth magazine. Grant Thornton’s not for profit side has identified five questions that every NED needs to ask to make sure the organisation is both taking advantage and limiting its risk. The questions are:

1. Is it part of our business plan?
2. How clear is our guidance?
3. Are we embedding understanding?
4. Are we exposed?
5. Can we measure the effect?
